Cali Jo

Let’s start with the basics, what may we call you?

Where are you from? My name is Cali or you can call me Cali Jo. I’m a 21 year old from small town, Indiana.

Have you done much traveling? Would you say that’s played a part in what you create?

I haven’t done much, but I have a long list of places I hope I get the chance to go to. A lot of my landscape paintings are based on my daydreams of these places.

Have you been very influenced by other people or artists?

Absolutely. I’ve gone through phases of my art. At first I wanted to be just like modern artists, but then I found a love for the renaissance era. I can thank my high school art teacher for expanding my knowledge and truly setting the spark in me to become an artist. I’m currently largely influenced by Monet and Van Gogh. Van Gogh will always have a special place in my heart.

What has been the most formative thing in regards to what you do?

Art has definitely been a personal escape for me. The feeling of getting lost in a painting is therapeutic and leaves me feeling refreshed. I’m not very good with words, but without effort or question, I can pour my heart and soul into a painting.

Do you like what you create?

Most of the time! There a days I get really down on myself and insecure about my work, but then my next painting can leave me feeling giddy. My favorite works tend to be ones that I jump into without restriction.

What kind of message do you wish to convey to your audience?

I don’t tend to paint with a purpose for an audience, but I do hope some of my work can spark a thought or emotion in someone else, whether it be the same way I see it or not.

What do you wish you could do better?

So many things. I feel like I have a long way to go to be the artist I want to be. I hope I never stop growing and learning.

How do you see your art changing in the coming years?

I’m on my way to being more confident in what I do, and I think my future will show that.

Would you call this a career? If not, would you like it to be?

Right now, no; but that would be the goal/dream!

How long has it taken to develop your unique style?

I have played and practiced with many different styles and techniques since my first painting seven-ish years ago. I think I am endlessly creating my style.

What is your typical medium?

Acrylics!

Your paintings are fascinating- there is a distinctly raw brush stroke you employ. Is this natural or developed?

I have found a love for fearlessly using gobs of paint. I am a VERY messy person and my paintings are kind of like my intentional messes.

How do you feel about the direction of the art world?

Art is everywhere and very wide and complex. I think artists are going to continue to try to push what people perceive as art and set new limits as art evolves. I also believe there will always be people who will stand up for the fine arts.

When all is said and done, what kind of mark would you like to leave on the world?

Something beautiful.

Keep up with Cali’s incredible progress:
